On this day in 1845 POTUS James K. Polk announced to congress his plans to expand the territory of the United States into the west. James Polk through his Manifest Destiny during his presidency gained for the United States-Oregon, Texas, New Mexico and Calfornia. One million square miles were added to U.S. territory by POTUS Jimmy Polk.
