Joe Gibbs- Hall Of Fame Football Coach For Washington Redskins -72 Today

Joe Gibbs who had a Hall of Fame career coaching for the Washington Redskins turns 72 today. Joe Gibbs led the Redskins to three Super Bowl titles. He is one of the most underrated coaches in football history in my opinion. When they talk of the great coaches sometimes they forget Gibbs. He won 3 Super Bowls with 3 quarterbacks who were above-average at best-Joe Theismann, Doug Williams and Mark Rypien. He also won those Super Bowls with teams that were not the most talented teams. His Redskins were known as “Smashmouth” football teams. His first stint with the Redskins was the most successful from 1981 to 1992. He then retired from football and went into the world of NASCAR where as an owner he had 3 NASCAR championship teams- with Terry Labonte and then Tony Stewart who won twice. In 2004 he came out of retirement to coach football again- with the Redskins. He would coach 4 seasons and although he didn’t have great success the second time around he did lead the Redskins to a couple playoffs. His overall record as a head coach with the Redskins 171 wins and 101 losses. In the past 30 years the only success the Redskins have had is with Gibbs as head coach.
