On this day in 1984 Band Aid- a group of 36 of the most popular musicians of the day gather at a studio in Notting Hill, London and record “Do They Know It’s Christmas” in order to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia. The song was written by Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure. The song would be released on November 29th. The idea for doing this came to Bob Geldof after seeing a report on television about the starving people of Ethiopia. Singer Paul Young would open the song. The most controversial part of the song was sung by Bono “Well tonight thank god it’s them instead of you”
The song would hit #1 on the U.K. charts and stay there for 5 weeks. It sold 11.8 million copies worldwide. In the summer of 1985 was the follow up – the Live Aid Concert.
