One of the ten greatest basketball players who ever lived- Oscar Robertson turns 74 today. Oscar Robertson was a 6’5″ shooting guard/point guard. He was a 12 time All-Star during his NBA career. He played with the Cincinnati Royals from 1960-1970 and finished his career with the Milwaukee Bucks 1970-1974. His championship came after joining the Bucks and teaming with a young Lew Alcindor. Robertson averaged 25.7 points a game in the NBA. He was the MVP in 1964. He is the only player in NBA history to average a triple double in a season. In 1961-62 Oscar averaged 30.8 points a game, 11.4 assists and 12.5 rebounds. Incredible season. After he retired he broadcast NBA games briefly at CBS. He was awful, even for a former athlete. One of the worst I’ve ever heard.
Oscar played his college career at Cincinnati. In his three years at Cincinnati they went 79-9 and Robertson averaged a remarkable 33.8 points a game which is the third highest ever. He led the Bearcats to two Final Fours but they didn’t win a National Championship. Following his college career Oscar starred on the greatest amateur team in basketball history- the 1960 gold medal team with Jerry West and Jerry Lucas and a host of others. What a team that was.
Oscar Robertson has always been famous for being a bitter, nasty person. The attached article from Bill Simmons sums Oscar up perfectly.
