Sandy Koufax the great Los Angeles Dodger pitcher retired from baseball on this day in 1966. He was only 3o years old. He had to retire because of arthritis in his left elbow. Sandy Koufax struggled early in his career to get control of his great fastball but when he did it was lights out. He had a 5 year stretch that is unrivaled in baseball history. He won three Cy Young Awards [this was when there was only one Cy Young Award given in all of baseball} He pitched 4 no-hitters, one of them being a perfect game. 4 time World Champion, 7 time All-Star. Its too bad his career was cut short but he was brilliant. One player I just missed seeing that I wish I had seen. Most of the people I have talked to who are older who saw him pitch answer my question “Who was the best pitcher you’ve ever seen” answer quickly “Sandy Koufax.” Sandy Koufax always a class act too.
