“Jonestown” This Day 1978

On this day in 1978 one of most bizarre and tragic stories I can remember from a strange and weird era the mass-suicide in Jonestown, Guyana that took the lives of 909 lives in Jonestown [270 of them children} and a total of 918 people in all died including California Congressman Leo Ryan who was murdered by the members of the People’s Temple before the suicides. The nutjob behind all this was Jim Jones. Jones was the leader of the People’s Temple. He had started in Temple in his native Indiana before moving it to San Francisco in the mid 1970’s. Jones moved to Guyana after his activities were being exposed in the United States.  The entire story is too complex and depressing to get into in a post for further reading I would suggest the book “Raven: The Untold Story of Rev. Jim Jones and His People” by Tom Reitermann and John Jacobs.
