On this day in 1959 “The Sound of Music” opened on Broadway. The Sound of Music was based on the book “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers” The composer and lyricist for The Sound of Music were Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The Sound of Music was a smash hit from the very first night. The show got mixed reviews but people didn’t seem to care. The soundtrack would sell 3 million copies and they would eventually make a movie of it. I guess its either a movie you either love or hate. I remember seeing it once years and years ago. Once was enough.

On Broadway the musical played until June of 1963, closing after 1443 performances.
