On this day in 1957 Notre Dame beat the Oklahoma Sooners 7-0 ending the Sooners record 47 game winning streak. The game was at Oklahoma. It was their first loss since the beginning of the 1953 season when Notre Dame had handed Oklahome a 28-21 defeat. The next game they tied Pitt 7-7 and from that time until this game they hadn’t lost. Their coach was the great Bud Wilkenson. After the loss some Sooner fans sat in the stands and cried. They were stunned. Oklahoma had been an 18 point favourite going into the game. The season before Oklahoma had beaten Notre Dame 40-0.
Since World War I only four Division I teams have had winning streaks of 30 games or more. The most recent was a 34 game winning streak from 2000-2002 by the Miami Hurricanes. No one has come close to the Oklahoma record and I would be willing to bet no one ever will.
