On this day in 1864 General William Tecumseh Sherman of the Union left Atlanta in smoking ruins and started his march to the sea. Sherman is still hated in the south for what he did in Georgia but he understood that to win the war you had to bring suffering to the people. Sherman and his army would take six weeks in their march to the sea destroying anything and everything in his path.
