On this day in 1982 Leonid Brezhnev who had been the General Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party for 18 years died at the age of 75. When I think of Brezhnev I think of those massive eyebrows. A sure sign that the Soviet Union was on its deathbed should have been in less than 3 years the Brezhnev to another old man Yuri Andropov taking over for him and dying in 1984 to Konstantin Chernenko who lasted only 13 months- dying in 1985. All were old dinosaurs from the old era of the Soviet Union. After the death of Chernenko they turned to a different generation- Mikhail Gorbachev. The end was near.
