Our long national nightmare is over- the election. Ten Notes On Tuesday’s election.
1. The Republican’s now seem to have become like the Democrats used to be in producing unelectable nominees for POTUS. The Democrats for a time were offering up the likes of George McGovern, Fritz Mondale, Mike Do-tax-us, and John Kerry. Now in the past two elections they have coughed up John McCain and Willard Romney. When we come around to 2016 the Democrats will have held the White House 16 of the past 24 years. From 1953-93 the Repubicans held the office for 28 of 40 years.
2. Obama’s victory gives us the first time since Jefferson-Madison and Monroe where we will have 3 -2 term presidents in a row.
3. I was amazed that Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin and Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock got more than one vote {you have to figure they voted for themselves} All these two waterheads had to do was smile and keep their mouths shut and they would be going to Washington. They couldn’t though and paid the price. Akin in Missouri where Claire McCaskill is not a popular figure-all he had to do was keep a pulse. I heard Mourdock’s concession speech and to me it just proves that he is even a bigger idiot than I even previously though. Where do they find such candidates? I am glad they were both beaten. I hope neither holds an office higher than Dogcatcher from this point on.
4. I hope the Republican Party just doesn’t sit back and think. OK Obama can’t run in 2016 we will be ok. They need some major changes in thought. They also need to start running electable candidates. Out of the whole bunch they had in the primary season Romney was the most electable of the bunch but that isn’t saying much.
5. The selection of Paul Ryan as Romney’s Vice Daddy candidate was an uninspired one. Ryan is going to have a long and brilliant career. He is a smart guy no doubt. I like Paul Ryan but to win this election Romney had to think outside of the “let’s get another white guy on the ticket” With Ryan they didn’t come close to winning his home state of Wisconsin. He was solid. He wasn’t Sarah Palin. But a Marco Rubio, a Bobby Jindal or one of the top women governors would have been a much more inspired choice. The Republican’s don’t get it. They days of throwing a Dan Quayle on the ticket and still winning are over. If this same election were held 20 years ago- Romney would have beaten Obama like a gong but as Robert Zimmerman once said “The times they are a changin’
6.Biggest mistake of the election Massachusetts electing this dingbat Elizabeth Warren and throwing out Scott Brown. They are talking about having a spirit of bipartisanship in Washington. If any Senator fits that mode its Scott Brown and they reject him for a woman who is far on the left who is not going to work with anyone .
7. I think Hurricane Sandy had a role in helping Obama win but I don’t think it was the deciding factor. I don’t think Romney really ever connected. He ran a poor campaign for the most part. Obama had a record to run against and it seemed like Romney was the one constantly on the defensive. The Republican’s need a Lee Atwater type to run these campaigns.
8. The make up of Congress looks much like it did before the election. More of the same from Washington? I hope in 4 years that Obama has done great things. The country sure needs to get on the right track. I am not holding my breath though. He’s great at getting votes. I don’t see great leadership there or much vision. I think he’s destined to be ranked along with the Jimmy Carter’s and the GW Bush’s as one of the worst POTUS in history. We shall see.
9. The most memorable moment of this whole sorry campaign season was Clint Eastwood talking to the chair at the Republican Convention.
10. In the end the Obama Campaign was run a lot better than the Romney Campaign. Obama should have been the one of the defensive but the Obama Campaign early on turned the tables on the Romney Campaign and Romney never could get rid of that Thurston Howell III image.

A nice, succinct analysis, even if I don’t agree with all of it. The perception from this side of the Atlantic is that the GOP is really going to have to reinvent itself if it wants more than a snowball’s chance in hell in 2016. However, contrary to Fox News, we are not all godless socialists over here and Romney had quite a few supporters in Euro-land. OK, I wasn’t one of them – partly because I think that Romney failed to appeal to anyone outside the core GOP demographic.
I agree that the Republican’s at this point need to make some changes but both parties have looked down and out before and roared back. 4 years is a long time.
Hans – spot on for the most part imho. i do not think either side ran good campaigns but romney was such a train wreck that obama’s looks great by default. and i agree 4 years is a long time. i do not see a spirit of bipartisanship forthcoming. not sure harry reid can get along with anyone.
Years ago Harry Reid would never have gotten close to having any leadership position in the Senate but I guess the quality of the Senate isn’t what it once was. When a dingbat like Elizabeth Warren [ and her one-thirty-sixth Indian blood} can get in…anyone can..
and i agree a zombie lee atwater would be a help
