Sargent Shriver- First Director Of Peace Corps/ 1972 Democratic Vice Presidential Nominee-Born This Day 1915

Sargent Shriver- best known for being JFK’s brother-in-law, the first director of the Peace Corps and the Vice Presidential candidate in the doomed George McGovern run for the presidency in 1972 was born on this day in 1915.

Shriver was married to Eunice Kennedy. He was also the architect of LBJ’s “War on Poverty”

George McGovern selected Shriver in 1972 after it was revealed that his first running mate Thomas Eagleton had received shock treatment for depression. The McGovern candidacy didn’t have a prayer. In 1976 Shriver made a run for the presidency himself but it was short lived. Shriver died last year at the age of 95.
