East Germany Opens Checkpoints In Berlin Wall Allowing Its Citizens To Travel To West Germany-This Day 1989

On this day in 1989 East Germany opened checkpoints in the Berlin Wall allowing its citizens to travel to West Germany. This was the beginning of the end for Communist-controlled East Germany. The next day they would start to tear down the Berlin Wall.  This was one of those events I remember watching on television and not believing what I was seeing. Amazing. One of the greatest moments of the 20th century. What Ronaldus Magnus had called for had happened. “Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall” In a couple years East and West Germany would be united and communism in eastern Europe and Russia would belong to the dustbin of history.
