On this day in 1991 Los Angeles Lakers superstar Magic Johnson announced that he was infected with the HIV virus and announced his retirement from basketball.
This is one of those events where you remember where you are when you heard the news. I recall thinking and I think everyone thought at the time that with this announcement we would be seeing the death of Magic Johnson. Magic would come back and play in the NBA again although he was never the same player.
Magic and Larry Bird saved the NBA. Loved watching both of those guys play.
