The legendary football coach of the Texas Longhorns Darrell Royal dead at 88. Royal was the head coach at Texas from 1957-1976. He won 3 National Titles and 11 Southwest Conference Titles in his time at Texas. He started his coaching career at Mississippi State from 1954-55 and Washington 1956. His National Championships at Texas were in 1963, 1969 and 1970. His record overall 167-47.5 at Texas. He was only 32 years old when he took over the Longhorns. Great coach.
No matter what you read it was Emory Bellard a Royal assistant coach at the time who invented the Wishbone offense not Royal.
Royal was a great coach of a bitter rival, but I will give him his due. I still laugh when he accused Switzer of cheating by scouting Texas – saying if Switzer could pass a lie detector about the incident he would quit coaching at Texas.
And thanks for pointing out that sure to be overlooked fact about Bellard.
Sad that we lost Bellard to ALS and Royal to Alzheimers.
