On this day in 1906 President Theodore Roosevelt became the first sitting POTUS to travel outside of the country. He left on a seventeen day trip to Panama and Puerto Rico. He was traveling to Panama to check on the progress of the Panama Canal which was being built, one of TR’s greatest achievements as POTUS.
