On this day in 1979 the Iranian hostage crisis began. A group of Iranian ‘students’ invaded the United States embassy in Tehran, Iran and took 90 hostages in all. The Ayatollah Khomeini had all non-American’s, all female and minority American’s released and kept 52 American men hostage. The hostages were kept for 444 days. I remember every night watching the ABC News and late night ABC’s Nightline [which was kind of invented to deal with the news on the hostage situation}.. every day there was a countdown.. Day 235 America Held Hostage..etc.. Jimmy Carter was held hostage in the White House. His inept presidency went down the tubs. It wasn’t until Ronaldus Magnus was taking the oath of office that the Ayatollah came to his senses. He figured Carter was weak but this crazy cowboy might blow us off the face of the earth.
