On this day in 1924 Nellie Tayloe Ross was elected Governor of Wyoming. She was the first elected female governor in the United States. She was defeated by a narrow margin in her re-election bid in 1926. In 1933 FDR appointed her as first female director of the U.S. Mint. She served in that position until Ike took over as POTUS in 1953. Nellie Tayloe Ross passed away in 1977 at the age of 101. At the time of her passing she was the oldest ex-governor living in the United States. There are six women governors in the United States today.
Wyoming, of course, a pioneer state regarding women’s suffrage, too.
