It Was Twenty-Years Ago Today- William Jefferson Clinton Elected POTUS

On this day in 1992- wow- it was 20 years ago today- Bill Clinton was elected to his first term as POTUS of the United States.

I can remember the moment on Election Day that I knew it was over- in the afternoon Mary Matalin was on CNN being interviewed and I could see that she had been crying. No results were being reported that early but I know the insiders know how things look. I figured she had heard the news that the news wasn’t good for George Herbert Walker Bush.

I didn’t think George H.W. Bush had the fire in the belly that fall. Of course he wanted to win but he seemed tired. I do not think when he left the White House that he was crushed like some are {Jimmy Carter for example} I think Bush in a way was ready to go home. I remember another moment that fall when I kind of thought his gig was up. It was a speech somewhere in Georgia maybe a week or so before the election. He looked tired, seemed to be going through the motions,  I can’t recall what he said but it sounded kind of corny and silly. People wanted a change. Ronaldus Magnus had eight years, then GHW Bush had 4. It was time for something new.

Funny how when you look back things seem better than you thought at the time. After 12 years of George W. Bush and Barry Obama- George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton look a lot better. I do think history is going to treat those two better than they will the last two. I would say given a choice I’d vote for William Jefferson Clinton over those two hacks that are on the ballot this coming Tuesday.

Side note -I’ve always believed if Republican mastermind strategist Harley LeRoy Atwater had not gotten brain  cancer and died this election would have turned out differently. Clinton had a ton of baggage. Atwater would have crushed him.
