Johnny Vander Meer who in 1938 pitched two consecutive no-hitters was born on this day in 1938. Certainly that is one record that is safe. It is not outside of possibility that someone could once again pitch two no-hitters in a row but I feel pretty safe in saying no one will break that record and pitch 3 in a row. Vander Meer pitched the no-hitters while a member of the Cincinnati Reds. The first no -hitter was against Boston, the second, four nights later was against the Brooklyn Dodgers in the first night game ever at Brooklyn’s famed “Ebbets Field”
Vaner Meer would end his career with a record of 119-121. He had a decent career but is one of those players who would have been forgotten had he not done something so spectacular. An unlikely pitcher to do an amazing feat like he did. Vander Meer died in 1997 at the age of 82.
record never will be broken – may be tied – but no one is going to throw three straight no hitters.
If anyone today is going to go back to back it will be Verlander..
Downright amazing!
