Former Major League PItcher Pascual Perez Murdered Age 55

Former Major League pitcher Pascual Perez has been found dead a victim of a robbery-murder in the Dominican Republic. Perez was a colorful pitcher back in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. My personal memory of him is when he came up with the Pittsburgh Pirates. I was at a game he was pitching at Three Rivers Stadium against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He hit Dodger outfielder Reggie Smith with a pitch. I do not know what was said but both Smith ran towards the Dodger dugout, Perez towards the Pirate dugout both men disappeared into the runway underneath the stadium to fight. Both teams followed them underneath including everyone on the  field and even the bullpens and the umpires. It was an odd sight sitting at a ballgame in the middle of the game and the field being empty for about ten minutes.

Perez had his best years with the Atlanta Braves but even there he had his moments. He acquired his nickname “I-285” because he couldn’t find his way to the ballpark in Atlanta one night when he was supposed to pitch. He just kept driving around and around.  Also when he struck out a hitter he would shoot him with an imaginary gun using his finger and he would pound the ball into the ground.

Overall he had a 67-68 record during his career. He had two brothers also pitch in the majors- Melido and Carlos and a cousin  Yorkis.

  1. no one needs to go out this way. if he was a lefty his eccentricity would have been appreciated more.
my enduring memory was him throwing his ‘pascualey pitch’ to glenn davis when they played for the expos and astros respectively. the pascualey pitch was a eephus type lob pitch. davis put it in the seats of stade olympique. good times.
    RIP Pascual.
