On this day in 1941 Mount Rushmore was completed. The memorial was sculpted by Gutzon Borglum and his son Lincoln Borglum. The entire memorial covers 1,278.45 acres and is 5725 feet above sea level. The four sculptured heads on Mount Rushmore are of four famous United States Presidents- George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The work on the memorial began October 4th, 1927.

Mount Rushmore was an idea of a South Dakota historian. The goal was to promote tourism in the area. I would say that the idea worked. Mount Rushmore draws nearly 15 million visitors a year.
