On this day in 1938 Orson Welles and his Mercury Theater Company broadcast “War of the Worlds” It was not a radio hoax and Orson Welles had no idea of the panic it would cause. The radio play was very realistic. Many of the radio listeners believed that a real Martian invasion was underway.
Orson Welles would go on to even greater fame. A couple years later he would make perhaps the greatest movie of all times “Citizen Kane”
haha oh i feel so ashamed but i have to tell youz the story . As a young boy i heard an adaption of Orson welles “War of the Worlds “in the radio , while reading a book . I didn´t realize that it was only a broadcast , i found it was very realistic , i can understand the reaction of the people in 1938 🙂
That would have been amazing to hear when it happened. I imagine I would have fell for it too. One of the great moments in radio history
I love both “War of the Worlds” and “Citizen Kane” Wells was brilliant in them.
My father was serving in the US Army when this was going on and was actually put on alert and ready to deploy to “combat” the aliens.
One of my favorite moments in American history.
