
Edward Brooke the former U.S. Senator from Massachusetts turns 93 today. He is the oldest living Republican Senator and the second oldest overall. Harry Byrd Jr.of Virginia is the oldest at 97 years old. John Glenn is right behind Brooke. In the House of Representatives the oldest living member is Ken Heckler of West Virginia who is 98. Brooke was the first popularly elected African-American U.S. Senator in American history. He served two terms from 1967-1979.
On November 4, 1973 Brooke became the first Republican Senator to call for Tricky Dick Nixon to resign from the presidency.
In 2008 in her autobiography Barbara Walter claimed she had an affair with Brooke back in the 1970’s. Brooke has never commented on that claim.
