On this day in 1776 Benjamin Franklin departed from America for France on a mission to seek French support for the American Revolutionary War. Franklin would be the Ambassador to France and would remain in France until 1785. Franklin would be a very popular figure in France. Benjamin Franklin was 70 years old when he left for France and 79 when he returned back to America.
