On this day in 1845 the first known box score appeared in the New York Morning News. This was a month after the first set of rules were written by Alexander Cartwright.

I’ve always loved reading baseball box scores. Baseball box scores are one of the few examples of objective journalism that you will read in a newspaper or anywhere for that matter.

The box score that I used as an example- from the greatest baseball game I’ve ever seen, Game 6 of the 1975 World Series.

  1. i always enjoyed the nuances of the agate box. even if they are getting more and more complicated – number of pitches seen by batter etc, still awesome to see.
i remember reading an article about baseball writer tim kurkjian about how he used to cut out and save the box scores in notebooks as his hobby.
