On this day in 1962, 50 years ago today President John F. Kennedy addressed the nation on television revealing for the first time to the public that U.S. spy planes had discovered Soviet missile bases were under construction in Cuba. Kennedy also announced a naval blockade to prevent Soviet ships from bringing more weapons to the communist island. The way he handled the Cuban Missile Crisis would be President Kennedy’s finest hour.
