Legendary Jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie was born on this day 1917. Gillespie was one of the greatest if not the greatest trumpet player of all time. He along with Charlie Parker were the major figures in the developement of bebop in the 1940’s. Gillespie died in 1993 of pancreatic cancer at the age of 75.
