On this day in 1977, 35 years ago today a plane carrying Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed in Mississippi killing lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines along with backup singer Cassie Gaines, the road manager, pilot and co-pilot. I can remember going to school and someone saying that Lynyrd Skynyrd had died.

Ronnie Van Zant was only 29 years old. One of the great losses in rock and roll history as far as what the future would have held.  My favourite Lynyrd Skynard song would have to be “Simple Man” but they had a lot of great songs. “Free Bird” and “Sweet Home Alabama” being the two biggest songs they had.
