On this day in 1968 former First Lady Jackie Kennedy the widow of POTUS John F. Kennedy married Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis. A move that was very unpopular in the United States. By all reports Jackie didn’t make the move out of any great love for Onassis but to provide security for her children. Also this was after the assassination of her brother-in-law Robert Kennedy. She felt they were killing Kennedy’s in the United States and she had to get her children out. She would be dubbed “Jackie O’ by the press. Aristotle Onassis died in 1975 at the age of 69. Jackie Kennedy-Onassis would die in 1994 at the age of 64.
