The Great Gretzky Becomes All-Time Leading Points Scorer In NHL History

On this day in 1989 the Great Gretzky, Wayne Gretzky became the all-time leading points scorer in National Hockey League history. The thing that really blows my mind on this is Wayne Gretzky at this point was only 28 years old. He would finish his career with 2857 points. Second place, not even close, Mark Messier with 1887. Gretzky averaged nearly 2 points a game! He also has the most goals in hockey history with 894. I never saw Babe Ruth but I did see Wayne Gretzky, he was the Babe Ruth of hockey.

  1. He was something else, wasn’t he? Those who saw him late in his career, when he tended to be noted more for his passing and assists, forget that he once scored 92 goals in a season. Comparing him to Babe Ruth is very apt.

    • I would also compare him somewhat to Larry Bird. Bird was thought too slow etc.. he had his doubters when he was in college- about his pro game.. but he was the smartest of players and had great vision… Gretzky wasn’t someone who impressed you when you just looked at him…but incredible talent and great vision.. bird and gretzky saw things before they happened.

    • And both of them worked relentlessly to make themselves better. There have been players with the talent of both, but few with the work ethic.

    • Great point. I remember once some reporter asked Bird, “What do you do when you are not playing basketball” and his reply was “Play basketball”
