On this day in 2003 Chicago Cubs fan Steve Bartman became more than famous he became in-famous. The Cubs who have never won a World Series since 1908, or been to a World Series since 1945 were 5ive outs away from going to the World Series. Game 6, Cubs up 3 games to 2 over Florida. 1 out in the 8th inning. Cubs lead the Marlins 3-0. Bartman was sitting in foul territory down the left field line. A foul ball drifted toward his seat. Cubs leftfielder Moises Alou ran over to the wall, jumped and reached up for it. Bartman reached out for the ball too deflecting it away from Alou’s glove. The Marlins go on to score 8 runs and win the game 8-3. They go on to win game 7 and the Cubs season ends. The Cubs have not won a playoff game since.
ESPN did one of their 30/30’s on the Bartman incident called “Catching Hell” well worth watching.
I remember well, the great big “oops”!
Just not meant for the Cubbies to win it seems..
Can’t believe it that the guy actually snatched that ball… Never seen/heard anything like that before!
