On this day in 1947 United States test pilot Chuck Yeager became the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound, reaching a velocity of more than 662 miles per hour at 40,000 feet in the X-1 rocket plane. Chuck Yeager, a native of West Virginia is still living. He’s 89  years old now.
