Sandy Koufax Refuses To Pitch Game 1 Of World Series Due To Yom Kippur

On this day in 1965 the Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax refused to pitch the first game of the 1965 World Series against the Minnesota Twins because the game was scheduled to be played on Yom Kippur, the most sacred of the Jewish holidays. The Dodgers would lose game 1, 8-2. The Dodgers would win the series in 7 games. Koufax would go 2-1 in that World Series. He shut out the Twins in games 5 and 7.
