POTUS Harry S. Truman Gives First Televised White House Address- This Day 1947

On this day in 1947 President Harry S. Truman gave the first televised White House address. In the address President Truman asked Americans to cut back on their use of grain in order to help starving Europeans. At this time television was in its early days and only thousands of people had television sets.

I wonder how a Harry Truman would go over today with the media the way it is? He wasn’t a made for television kind of guy. I would hope that a man like Harry Truman could get elected today.

  1. I don’t want to spoil the Truman love-in, but while he was making this call, rich Americans and Brits were hiding many millions of pounds and dollars in secret accounts and Swiss bankers were hatching schemes to rob the poor to feed the rich. So as charitable Yanks were digging deep to finance the Marshall Plan, US brokers and banks were profiting massively as more and more dodgy money came in from rich Europeans. An American analyst calculated that the secret flow of hidden private cash was worth approx $4.3 billion, more than the US aid flowing the other way. So was Truman that honest really?(Quoted in Nicholas Shaxson – Treasure Islands: Tax Havens and the Men who Stole the World)

  2. i think that the banking industry has always run counter to any countries best interest. i would argue today that the fed and bernake do not care what the main street views of them are.
definitely sounds like a good read i will pick that one up and see.
