Former Oklahoma Sooner and Dallas Cowboy football coach Barry Switzer turns 75 today. As the head coach at Oklahoma they won 3 National Championships and 12 Big 8 Titles. He was the head coach there from 1973-88. He was a great recruiter but ran a program that was a renegade. They landed on probation a couple times. His overall record in college was 157-29-4. He was 8-5 in Bowl games. He was 12-5 against his big rival Tom Osbourne at Nebraska.
After Jerry Jones fired Jimmy Johnson, Switzer was named the Dallas Cowboy coach. The team was ready made for him. I don’t think he was much of a pro head coach but he did win one Super Bowl. I remember he didn’t even know what teams were in the Cowboys division. He coached the Cowboys from 1994-97 and had a 40-24 record. He didn’t have much command over the Cowboy players, things got kind of wild in the Switzer years. I remember when Jerry Jones named Barry Switzer head coach it was like… WHAT? They had known each other from college at Arkansas.
