19 Year Old Mickey Mantle Severely Injures His Right Knee- Game 2 of 1951 World Series

Mickey Mantle may have been the greatest young baseball prospect ever. He was the ultimate 5 tool player. He could run like the wind. He was taught by his father Mutt to become a switch-hitter. He had power from both sides of the plate. He was even named for a Hall of Famer- Mickey Cochrane.  At age 19 he was playing for the Yankees in a World Series. In Game 2 of the 1951 World Series a ball was hit between Mantle who was in right field and Joe DiMaggio who was in center. DiMaggio made an abrupt call on the flyball[the ball was hit by Willie Mays} and that seems to have been a factor in what happened. Mantle got his cleats caught on a drainage cap at Yankee Stadium serverely injuring his right knee. Those who witnessed the play said Mantle went down like he had been shot. Doctor’s today believe what he may have done was a torn ACL. He would play his entire career without it ever being properly treated. He would go on to have a Hall of Fame career. One of the all -time greats but there was always a question in baseball people’s minds. How great would he have been if he hadn’t tore his knee up at age 19.  He was never as fast again. He would go on to have numerous injuries in his career.
