In another 6 weeks or so they will be announcing the awards for the 2012 season which is coming to an end. Here is how I would vote if they gave me a vote.
MVP- American League. Miguel Cabrera. He is the first Triple Crown winner in 45 years. If I were starting a team I’d want Mike Trout, who has had a great season and in a normal year would be deserving but 1- Cabrera-Triple Crown and his team made the playoffs. Trout’s team didn’t make the playoffs.
MVP National League- Buster Posey. 2 months ago the award was Andrew McCutchen’s. No longer. Posey had a great season and is the key offensive player on a playoff team. The other main candidates will not be heading to the playoffs-Braun, McCutchen.
Cy Young-American League. This is a tough one. Weaver. Verlander, or Price. Price won 20 and led the league in ERA. I will go with him. All three are deserving.
Cy Young-National League. Gio Gonzalez, R.A.Dickey or Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw is the best pitcher in the league but for this year I will go with the knuckleballer Dickey who finished 2nd in ERA and won 20 on a crappy Mets team.
Rookie of the Year-American League- Mike Trout
Rookie of the Year-National League- Bryce Harper
Manager of the Year-American League-Bob Melvin, Oakland
Manager of the Year-National League- Davey Johnson-Washington
i agree with almost all of these. i would pick verlander for al cy. and i think that craig kimbrel deserves some mention in the nl cy. i would go with wade miley as nl roy – but i could be talked into harper.
one of the things that i am just incensed with by baseball writers voting is that its like nothing has ever happened in the past. for instance what craig kimbrel has done – is just stupid. .65 whip 1.01 era and he is not really getting any consideration. when dennis eckersley put up similar numbers he was the runaway MVP. i realize that stats change from year to year, but lets have some consistency.
last year justin verlander was a runaway cy and mvp. he was 24-5 and 2.40 era. this year his stats are almost the same and not even in the talk.
the one that will always stick with me was the 1995 nl mvp. it was given to barry larkin in a season where he hit 319 with 66 rbi. dante bichette hit 340 and drove in 128 rbi. piazza hit 346 with 90+ rbi. greg maddux went 19-2 with a 1.63 era. and he finished 3rd in the balloting. third?! the BBWA voting is a joke, and when trout wins the mvp it will be another travesty. cabrera will join ted williams as winning the triple crown and not winning the mvp
