Yankees Bucky F’in Dent Homers Over Green Monster- Yanks Beat Red Sox In Playoff

This is a day that may still keep Boston Red Sox fans up at night. On this day in 1978 Bucky F. Dent hit what looked like a routine fly to left field, that kept going and going until it disappeared over the head of Carl Yastremski and the Green Monster for a three home run of Mike Torrez that won the one game playoff between the Yankees and Red Sox.

In 1978 the Red Sox looked like they were going to run away and hide from the rest of the AL East. The Yankees in mid-July were 14 1/2 games out. The Bronx was on fire. Fiery Billy Martin was fired and replaced by Bob Lemon who was very laid back and calm. The change sparked a big second half comeback. The Red Sox and Yankees were tied at seasons end. A one game playoff in Fenway Park. The Yankees behind Bucky F’in’ Dent’s 3 run homer won the division, the Yanks would go on to win the World Series vs the Los Angeles Dodgers.
