On this day in 1968 The Beatles “Hey Jude” clocking in at 7 minutes and 10 seconds becomes the longest song to ever reach #1 on the charts. Paul McCartney wrote “Hey Jude” at the same time fellow Beatle John Lennon was getting divorced from his first wife Cynthia. McCartney claimed he wrote the song for John and Cynthia’s son Julian. John Lennon always felt that the song was directed to him and his relationship to Yoko Ono. Either way it became the most successful single ever for The Beatles and remains a classic to this day. And it remains the longest song to ever reach #1 on the charts.
