The Greatest Third Baseman In Baseball History-Mike Schmidt-63 Today

The great Mike Schmidt, the greatest third baseman in baseball history turns 63 today. {I’d rank Schmidt just ahead of George Brett on the list- George Brett is one of my all time favourite players but I have to give the nod to Michael Jack Schmidt}

Mike Schmidt played his entire career with the Philadelphia Phillies, from 1972-89. He hit 548 home runs, 1595 RBI and a career average of .267. Schmidt was a 12 time All-Star,Ā  8 time National League Home Run Champion,Ā  He won the Gold Glove Award 10 times. He was a 3 time National League Most Valuable Player. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility 1995.

I always like to use Schmidt as an example of why you need to have patience with young players. In his rookie year he hit .196. Schmidt turned out alright.

    • Schmidt is on the short list of the best players I’ve ever seen.. I hated and still hate the Phillies though… but I give him his due.

    • My favorurite Schmidt story. He had 499 homers. He was playing in Pittsburgh, a Saturday afternoon game. The Pirates were like 30 games out of first place. I wanted to see #500… a friend of mine at the game with me- didn’t want it to happen. He wanted the Pirates to win. Now that is a die hard fan. The next day Michael Jack Schmidt hit #500
