Jose Canseco Becomes Baseball’s First 40-40 Player-This Day 1988

On this day in 1988 Jose Canseco of the Oakland A’s became baseball’s first 40-40 man. 40 home runs/40 stolen bases in one season. There are now 4 40-40 members- Canseco/ Barry Bonds/ Alex Rodriguez/ Alfonso Soriano. Note- Canseco-Bonds and A-Rod all juicers.  I think this is a very overrated stat because back in baseball history no one thought of stats like this. The best quote on it was from the great Mickey Mantle, when all the hype about Canseco was going on Mick said “If I knew they were going to make such a big deal about it I would have done it a couple times myself” No doubt he would have.
