On this day in 1981 Sandra Day O’Connor was confirmed by the U.S. Senate 99-0 to become the first female member of the United States Supreme Court. She would take the seat of the retiring Potter Stewart. Sandra Day O’Connor would remain on the Supreme Court until her retirement in 2006. She was replaced by Samuel Alito.

Sandra Day O’Connor was appointed by President Ronaldus Magnus. She would at times disappoint the conservatives with her rulings on the court. She is still living- 82 years old.

Note- She briefly dated while in college at Stanford her classmate- William Rehquist, who went on to become the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
