Dennis Conner- 4 Time “America’s Cup” Winner- 70 Today

Dennis Connor Cover - Sports Illustrated February 16, 1987

Dennis Conner turns 70 today. Dennis Conner put Yachting on the map in the 1980’s. He won the America’s Cup in 1974, 1980, 1987 and 1988. He was the skipper of the celebrated “Stars and Stripes” He made people actually care about Yachting for a while. The man was on the cover of Sports Illustrated and Time. I haven’t heard is name in a number of years though. Back then it seemed like the America’s Cup got a lot of ink. I have no idea who won the last one or when it was. No one cares anymore. Back in 1987 Jimmy Buffett even wrote a ‘fight song” for Dennis Conner and “Stars and Stripes” called “Take It Back”

  1. i read some articles not long ago about what larry ellison from oracle has done with the cup in regards to technology and making it watchable.
it is going to be an awesome event to check out now. with the new catamarans they are building its going to have a larger sense of danger and these new boats can get out of control quickly.
