On this day in 1901 President William McKinley died of the wounds he suffered from being shot on September 6th,1901 by an assassin in Buffalo, New York. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt takes over as POTUS. There have been four POTUS who have been assassinated, Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley and John Kennedy. Four others have died of illness in office- William Henry Harrison, Zachary Taylor, Warren Harding and Franklin Roosevelt. Only one has resigned-Richard Milhaus Nixon.
