On this day in 1935 former Louisiana Governor and current United States Senator Huey Long aka “The Kingfish” was shot and would die two days later. Senator Long was at the capitol in Baton Rouge attempting to oust an opponent Judge Benjamin Pavy in a re-districting plan. If this plan passed Pavy would be removed from the bench. At 9pm Dr. Carl Weiss who was Pavy’s son-in-law was waiting to speak to Long. He had attempted to see Long a few times earlier but had been brushed off by Long’s bodyguards. At 9:20pm Dr. Weiss approached Long and fired a handgun and hit long in the abdomen. Huey Long’s bodyguards then unloaded on Dr. Weiss hitting him with 62 shots and killing him instantly. Huey Long was taken to the hospital where he would die of his wounds two days later. Huey Long was 42 years of age.
