Rock and Roll Pioneer Buddy Holly Born This Day 1936

1950’s rock and roll pioneer Buddy Holly was born on this day in 1936.

10 Notes on Buddy Holly

1. Buddy Holly was born Charles Hardin Holley on September 7th, 1936 in Lubbock, Texas. His nickname “Buddy” was a family nickname for him.

2. Buddy Holly recorded for only a year and a half before his death but his influence on the future of rock and roll was huge. A who’s who of future stars were influenced by Holly. Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello etc..and probably the biggest influence he had was on The Beatles. The name The Beatles was a play on Buddy Holly’s group “The Crickets” The Beatles were influenced to write their own songs because Holly wrote his own songs. The Beatles would cover one of Holly’s songs “Words Of Love”

3. Buddy Holly only had 8- Top 40 hits during his brief career. His only #1 was “That’ll Be The Day”  He had a number of great songs that we not hits. He recorded a lot during his brief career. A lot of that material wasn’t released until after his untimely death.

4. Don Mclean’s classic “American Pie” was inspired by the day Buddy Holly died. It was “the day the music died” Don Mclean dedicated the album to Buddy Holly.

5. The Buddy Holly Story- came out in 1978. It was full of inaccuracies but Gary Busey was great at Holly. The role of his life.

6. Buddy Holly was among the first inaugural class in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

7. Beatle Paul McCartney owns Buddy Holly’s music rights.

8. Buddy Holly was killed February 3rd, 1959 in a plane crash that took the life of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper in Grant Township, Iowa after a concert in Clear Lake, Iowa.

9. Of the pre-Beatles Rock and Roll artists my two favorites are Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry.

10. Buddy Holly was only 22 when he died. He had been recording less than 2 years. You have to wonder what might have been had he lived? I think the best thing about Buddy Holly as a rock and roll act was his songwriting. I figure he would have continued to write great songs for a number of years.

  1. if memory serves waylon jennings had a seat on that ill fated flight and gave it up because he was not feeling well.
people would call him a ‘geek’ today because of the way he looks, but would probably still play his music.

    • A lot of guys seemed to look like Buddy. I have in the past looked through my parents high school yearbooks. The thing that always struck me is the guys all looked about 5-7 years older than they actually were.
