On this day in 1522 what was left of Ferninand Magellan’s men completed the first circumnatigation of the world. Only 22 men and a single ship, the Vittoria survived the ordeal. Magellan started out with 5ive ships and 270 men. Magellan was murdered in the Philippines in April 1521.

Ferninand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer. It took almost exactly three years to circumnatigate the world. Magellan’s expedition was the first to sail from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific and also the first to sail the Pacific Ocean. Ferninand Magellan was killed in the Battle of Mactan on April 27th,1521. He was 40 or 41 years old.
