Cal Ripken Jr Breaks Lou Gehrig’s Consecutive Games Streak- This Day 1995

On this day in 1995 Cal Ripken Jr broke a record that no one thought would be broken in the game of baseball. He broke Lou Gehrig’s record of 2130 games played a record that had stood for 56 years. Ripken would eventually set a record that I do not think will be touched- 2632 games in a row. Fans voted this the most memorable moment in MLB history. It did come at a key time, after the strike. I have a great deal of admiration for someone like Ripken who comes to work and does his job to the best of his ability each day but I think calling it the greatest moment in major league history is a reach. A great and memorable moment it was though. The reason i think it will never be broken-no team will allow anyone to get close. It would become a distraction to the team and to the player.
