On this day in 1925 the USS Shenandoah, the United States’ first-American-built rigid airship was torn apart and crashed in a storm near Caldwell, Noble County, Ohio. Fourteen of her 42-man crew perished, including her commander, Zachary Lansdowne.
The USS Shendandoah was built in 1922-23 and first flew in September of 1923. It was on its 57th flight. In the aftermath of the crash one positive was they made future airships better.
The Noble County School District named its elementary, junior high and high schools after the Shenandoah. Their school nickname is the Zeps.

one wonders had this not happened, nor the hindenburg 12 years later, would airships like these have been another type of travel.
